Case Study: Seamless Transit Shipment from Europe to Russia in 15 Days
Case Study: Multimodal Solutions and Document Switch in Action
Customer Profile: A Germany-based industrial machinery manufacturer and a plant installation firm operating in Russia. The Challenge: Closure of direct routes, 3-4 week truck queues at border crossings, and the necessity to manage the shipment within a framework of legal/commercial confidentiality.
1. Operational Strategy: "Sea-to-Sea" Model via Turkey Transshipment
To bypass the congestion on the traditional road route, Vast Lines decided to transship the cargo via Turkey by sea.
Step 1 (Loading): 4 units of High Cube (40′ HC) containers were loaded onto a vessel at the Port of Hamburg and shipped to Istanbul.
Step 2 (Intermediate Stop – Istanbul): When the containers arrived at Ambarlı Port, they were placed under the “Transit Regime” (T1) without being nationalized.
Step 3 (Document Management): A Document Switch process was applied within the scope of transit trade carried out through Turkey. Original bills of lading were cancelled, and new sets appropriate for the commercial flow were issued.
2. Critical Success Factor: Use of SOC Containers
The biggest differentiator in this operation was Vast Lines’ use of its own containers (SOC).
Why? While global line containers generally avoid entering Russian ports, our SOC equipment eliminated the need for cargo transfer (re-stuffing).
Result: Since the cargo was not removed from the containers, the risk of damage was reduced to zero, and port expenses were decreased by 30%.
3. Delivery and Results
After a short wait in Istanbul, the cargo dispatched to the Port of Novorossiysk reached the buyer in a record time of 15 days in total.
| Criterion | Road (Border Crossing) | Vast Lines Transit Solution |
| Transit Time | 35 – 45 Days | 15 Days |
| Damage Risk | High (Multiple Transfers) | Zero (Closed Box with SOC) |
| Cost | Variable and High | Fixed and Optimized |
| Customs | Uncertain Waiting at Border | Planned Transit Process |
4. What Does This Success Mean for You?
This case study proves that with the right strategy and a strong local partner, even routes that seem impossible become manageable. Vast Lines ensures the continuity of trade by using this niche corridor between Europe and Russia every day.
