Indirect Delivery and Document Switch: Managing Flexibility and Confidentiality in Global Trade

Vast Lines - Liner & Booking Agency Istanbul

Changes in global trade routes and geopolitical restrictions have made it mandatory not only to physically transport cargo but also to strategically manage commercial documents. Indirect Delivery and Document Switch are the two most critical operational tools, especially on the Turkey route, which is the heart of transit trade.

1. What is Indirect Delivery? (Physical Path vs. Commercial Path)

Indirect Delivery is the delivery of cargo from the seller to the buyer via a third country or free zone instead of a direct route.

  • Why is it used? It is preferred for the purposes of managing the absence of direct services, embargoes/restrictions, or protecting commercial confidentiality (ensuring the manufacturer is not known by the end buyer).

  • Operational Flow: Cargo departs from the main port; it is processed under customs supervision in a transit hub like Turkey and dispatched to the final destination with a new transport document.

2. Document Switch Operation: How Does the Mechanism Work?

A Document Switch is the cancellation of the original bill of lading (Bill of Lading) issued during transport and the issuance of a new set of bills of lading at a transit point.

Process Steps:

    • First Set: Issued between the Manufacturer (A) and the Intermediary (B – Turkey).

    • The Switch: When the cargo arrives at the transit point (Istanbul/Mersin) or is in transit after loading, the original bills of lading are returned to the carrier/agent.

    • Second Set: A new bill of lading is issued between the Intermediary (B) and the Final Buyer (C).

      • At this stage, the shipper, consignee, notify party, and even the product description (in accordance with legislation) can be updated.

3. Legal Framework and Risk Management

The Document Switch operation is subject to strict rules to prevent fraud and ensure compliance with international sanctions:

  • Carrier Approval: Not every carrier may accept the “switch” process. As Vast Lines, we work with lines that permit this process and manage it rapidly.

  • Consistency: Data in the newly issued documents (weight, container no, seal no) must be 100% consistent with the physical cargo.

  • Sanctions Compliance: The process must only be carried out on legal grounds permitted by international trade law (re-export, transit trade).

4. Why Should You Manage This Process with Vast Lines?

Indirect Delivery and Document Switch are “tailor-made” tasks that accept no room for error.

  • Confidentiality Guarantee: We protect your commercial advantage by keeping your supplier’s information hidden from the end buyer.

  • Customs Integration: Thanks to our warehouse and free zone network in Turkey, we fully manage the physical security and legal status (Transit T1/T2) of the cargo while documents are being changed.

  • SOC Container Advantage: By using our own containers, we bypass the bureaucratic hurdles of carriers in document switching and accelerate the process by days.
